Leaves and needles that clog local gutters
A wide variety of trees grow across the region, though the specific mix changes depending on where you live in Alabama. Broadleaf trees like white oak, hickory, tulip poplar, sweetgum, and red maple drop large fallen leaves and heavy acorns into residential gutters. Sweetgum trees also drop spiky seed pods that catch inside downspout elbows. Conifers like loblolly pine and eastern red cedar drop sharp pine needles and small cones that slip past basic strainers. In spring, thick yellow pollen coats roof surfaces and settles into gutters, forming a sticky paste when mixed with rain. By fall, dropping oak leaves and maple foliage combine with pine needles to block water flow entirely.
