Debris Buildup and Drainage Conditions
Roof drainage channels frequently collect windblown debris, twigs, deciduous leaves, and pine needles that shed from nearby branches. When left in the gutter trough, decaying vegetation breaks down into a heavy organic sludge that traps moisture. Roof gravel and granular shingle runoff can also settle in lower troughs, restricting the natural gravity flow toward downspout openings. During periods of heavy rain, blocked channels force water to back up, leading to standing pools in the gutters or localized spills over the outer edge.
