Leaves and needles that clog local gutters
Trees common across this region drop various types of organic debris throughout the year, though the exact mix differs across the state. Deciduous species like broadleaf white oak, hickory, tulip poplar, sweetgum, and red maple shed heavy fall leaves along with prickly sweetgum galls and hard acorns. Conifers such as loblolly pine and eastern red cedar drop sharp pine needles and small pinecones that easily pass through coarse guards. In spring, oak and pine species discharge fine yellow pollen that combines with standing water to create a thick sludge. This heavy wet paste settles in the bottom of the trough and restricts drainage.
