Leaves and needles that clog local gutters
A wide variety of trees flourish across Iowa, though the regional foliage mix varies from neighborhood to neighborhood. Broadleaf species such as bur oak, silver maple, green ash, hackberry, and cottonwood line local streets alongside evergreen conifers like eastern red cedar and ponderosa pine. In spring, cottonwood trees release dense white fluff that clings to damp metal surfaces inside a gutter, creating fibrous mats that block water flow. Strong regional winds scatter fine ash seeds, pine needles, grit, and blowing dust into channel corners. By late fall, broadleaf trees drop vast loads of heavy leaves, quickly filling rain troughs and stopping proper drainage completely.
