Leaves and needles that clog local gutters
Trees common to this region create distinct debris patterns across the state. In spring, cottonwood trees release floating fluff that coats gutter channels and clings to downspout openings. Broadleaf species like bur oak, silver maple, green ash, and hackberry drop heavy leaf loads that accumulate quickly, while green ash trees also dump winged seeds that settle into quiet water traps. In areas with eastern red cedar and ponderosa pine, evergreen needles fall year-round, weaving into tight mats that catch dirt. High prairie winds strip dry leaves, twigs, and grit from surrounding soil, packing channels full of heavy mud that prevents rain from draining properly.
