Drainage Conditions and Debris Accumulation
Gutters and downspouts naturally collect windblown organic matter, silt, and tree litter over time. Understanding how debris collects in your system helps determine the type of attention needed:
- An outlet blockage occurs when leaves or twigs gather directly over the downspout drop, backing up water in a localized pool even if the rest of the channel is relatively clear.
- A run blockage develops when accumulated organic material settles along the horizontal gutter trough, restricting flow across an entire section and causing water to pool mid-channel.
- Roof shingle grit can settle beneath lighter organic matter, forming a dense sludge that impedes water movement toward the downspout outlets.
