Leaves and needles that clog local gutters
A varied collection of trees grows across the region, dropping broad leaves, seeds, needles, and light fibers into open gutters. Broadleaf varieties include bur oak, silver maple, cottonwood, green ash, and hackberry. Conifers such as eastern red cedar and ponderosa pine also drop needles along rooflines. Cottonwood trees shed light fluff in late spring, which clings to damp metal channels and forms mat barriers. Green ash trees release heavy seed clusters, while silver maples drop winged seeds that quickly lodge in downspouts. Leaf drop usually peaks in mid October, filling roof gutters with broad oak leaves. Conifer needles fall throughout the year, weaving dense nets that trap windblown grit and soil.
