Identifying Outlet Blockages and Overflow Conditions
Gutter problems often show up in two distinct ways depending on where debris settles along the system. An outlet blockage happens when leaves, pine needles, or twigs bunch directly over the downspout opening, causing water to back up and spill over near the corners even if the main gutter runs are mostly empty. In contrast, widespread overflow along the middle of a gutter run typically indicates that settled mud, decayed organic material, or standing silt has accumulated along the entire channel, preventing rainfall from reaching the outlets regardless of downspout condition.
