Drainage Obstructions and Debris Buildup
Accumulated organic material can affect a roof drainage system in different ways depending on where the obstruction develops. An outlet blockage typically forms where the horizontal trough joins the downspout, causing water to back up and spill over the end of the gutter even if the rest of the channel remains clear. In contrast, debris distributed along an entire gutter run restricts capacity gradually, resulting in overflow along the middle of the channel during steady rainfall.
