When West Point gutters fill up
Trees common in the region, including red maple, white oak, hickory, tulip poplar, sweetgum, and eastern white pine, drop a variety of heavy debris into drainage channels across West Point. Oak catkins fill gutters during spring, while acorns, leaves, and spiky sweetgum balls collect during early fall. Leaf drop usually peaks in mid October, filling roof troughs right before cold weather arrives. Winters in New York bring freezing nights and heavy snow, though ice dams in gutters are not an issue here. Still, frozen buildup can weigh down channels. We recommend gutter cleaning at least twice a year, spring and fall, to clear out organic debris before seasonal storms arrive.
