When Thornapple gutters fill up
Trees common in the region, such as broadleaf sugar maple, red maple, bur oak, hickory, American elm, white pine, and spruce, drop heavy debris. In spring, maple seed wings fill open channels. By fall, broadleaf leaves and oak acorns cover roof surfaces. Leaf drop usually peaks in early October across Michigan. When winter arrives, freezing nights lead to ice dams in gutters, where trapped water freezes solid, adding immense weight to the roofline and causing roof leaks. We recommend cleaning at least twice a year, spring and fall, to clear out fallen pine needles and foliage before freezing weather arrives. Regular gutter cleaning keeps the entire gutter system open when winter snow melts.
