When Tamaqua gutters fill up
Trees common in the region drop leaves and seeds directly into gutter troughs. Broadleaf trees like red maple, white oak, hickory, tulip poplar, and sweetgum shed fallen leaves, acorns, spiky sweetgum balls, and spring oak catkins. Eastern white pine needles also drop continuously. In Tamaqua, leaf drop usually peaks in mid October, creating total blockages right before winter. Freezing nights follow, making ice dams in gutters a real winter hazard when standing water expands. We recommend cleaning gutters at least twice a year, during spring and fall. Clear gutters in spring to manage heavy rainfall, and clean them in fall to clear autumnal debris before snow and ice arrive in Pennsylvania.
