When Southold gutters fill up
Trees common in the region drop a constant stream of waste into gutter channels throughout the year. Spring pushes oak catkins into every gutter, while broadleaf red maple, white oak, hickory, tulip poplar, and sweetgum shed fallen leaves, spiky sweetgum balls, and heavy acorns. Eastern white pine needles also settle into roof gutters. Leaf drop usually peaks in mid October across Southold. Winter brings freezing nights and likely snow, turning trapped water into heavy ice inside clogged channels, though ice dams in gutters are not an issue here. We recommend gutter cleaning at least twice a year, spring and fall, to clear channels before snow settles on the roof.
