Conditions That Cause Gutter Blockages
Roof drainage systems collect airborne organic material and roof runoff over time. When water cannot flow freely along the trough toward the outlets, blockages typically develop from a combination of common debris sources:
- Deciduous leaves, pine needles, and broken twigs shed from nearby tree canopies.
- Granules washing off aging asphalt shingles that settle into dense sludge at the bottom of the channel.
- Windblown seeds and organic matter that decompose and sprout inside damp gutter troughs.
- Pest nests or bird activity that obstruct narrow downspout entry points.
