Distinguishing Outlet Clogs from Run Overflow
Water issues during rainstorms usually stem from one of two common situations. An outlet clog happens when leaves, small twigs, or shingle sediment collect directly over the downspout drop, preventing water from exiting even if the rest of the trough is empty. In contrast, run overflow occurs along straight stretches where accumulated silt, heavy organic debris, or pitch settling traps standing water until it spills over the edges. Identifying where the overflow happens helps define the necessary cleaning scope.
