When Pompey gutters fill up
Trees common in the region drop debris into open gutters throughout the year. Broadleaf red maple, white oak, hickory, tulip poplar, and sweetgum produce fallen leaves, heavy acorns, spiky sweetgum balls, and spring oak catkins that block downspout openings. Conifers like eastern white pine drop needles that weave tight mats inside every gutter. Fall leaf drop usually peaks in early October, filling trough runs right before freezing nights begin. Winter snow and ice dams in gutters create real structural risk when trapped meltwater freezes inside filled channels. We recommend professional gutter cleaning at least twice a year, during spring and fall, to protect Pompey homes from cold winter freezes.
