Outlet Blockages versus Mid-Run Gutter Overflow
Understanding how water behaves during rainfall helps identify the exact drainage issue affecting your roofline. You might notice water spilling over a single section of the gutter during a storm or backing up across the entire roofline.
- An outlet blockage happens when leaves, twigs, or accumulated sludge lodge directly at the drop outlet where the gutter trough connects to the vertical downspout. Water pools in the channel and pours over the side nearest the downspout because it has nowhere else to exit.
- Mid-run gutter overflow occurs along the horizontal run of the channel. This typically indicates that heavy debris has settled along the length of the trough, reducing its capacity, or that standing water cannot reach the outlet effectively.
