When Ontwa gutters fill up
Tree species common in the region, including sugar maple, red maple, bur oak, hickory, American elm, white pine, and spruce, drop heavy materials onto local roofs. Maple seed wings fall in spring, while acorns, pine needles, and heavy leaves land during fall. Leaf drop usually peaks in mid October across Ontwa. Freezing nights and snow are frequent winter events, leading to ice dams in gutters when trapped water freezes near the roof edge. These ice dams push up under shingles and weigh down support brackets. We recommend cleaning at least twice a year, spring and fall, to maintain clear channels before winter snow packs the system.
