When Oberlin gutters fill up
Trees common in the region, including sugar maple, red maple, bur oak, hickory, American elm, white pine, and spruce, scatter fallen leaves, maple seed wings, acorns, and pine needles across roofs. Leaf drop usually peaks in mid October, filling the gutter system before winter sets in. Freezing nights happen throughout winter in Oberlin, and ice dams in gutters are a real winter problem when trapped water freezes near the roofline. Heavy snow further weighs down blocked systems. We recommend cleaning at least twice a year, spring and fall, to clear early seed drop and late fall leaves before ice forms.
