When New Hanover gutters fill up
Trees common in the region, such as red maple, white oak, hickory, tulip poplar, sweetgum, and eastern white pine, drop heavy natural material throughout the year. Spring brings oak catkins into the trough, while summer storms knock down small twigs. In mid October, fallen leaves, acorns, and spiky sweetgum balls quickly pile up along the roof. Freezing nights happen here and snow is likely, though ice dams in gutters are not an issue. Trapped moisture can freeze inside a packed gutter, bending metal channels and straining fasteners. We recommend scheduling a full gutter cleaning at least twice a year, spring and fall, to keep channels empty before winter snow arrives.
