Conditions That Cause Blocked Gutters
Gutters and downspouts collect runoff along with whatever falls onto the roof or washes down the slopes. Several property conditions can contribute to blockages over time:
- Fallen leaves, needles, twigs, and organic matter settling directly into the gutter channels.
- Wind-blown organic material that accumulates in low-slope valleys and washes toward downspout openings.
- Accumulated grit shedding from aging roofing materials that settles into standing water along the gutter floor.
- Pests or nesting material obstructing water passage at elbows and drop outlets.
