When Mendota gutters fill up
Trees common in the region, such as broadleaf sugar maple, red maple, bur oak, hickory, American elm, white pine, and spruce, drop heavy materials into roof systems throughout the year. Maple seed wings fall during late spring, while acorns, pine needles, and dense broadleaves drop as leaf drop usually peaks in mid October. Cold Illinois winters bring freezing nights, snow, and ice dams in gutters when trapped water freezes near the roof edge. We recommend cleaning at least twice a year, spring and fall, to clear out spring seeds and fall leaves before winter freezing starts. Scheduled clearing keeps channels clear during sudden spring downpours and heavy winter thaws.
