Common Drainage Issues and Gutter Blockages
Gutter problems generally stem from localized obstructions or systemic pitch issues along the run. Understanding how these issues present helps define the necessary cleaning scope:
- Outlet clogs occur when leaves, twigs, or accumulated silt wedge tightly into the drop outlet where the trough joins the downspout, stopping drainage entirely.
- Mid-run overflow happens when standing water pools and spills over the outer edge because of settled sediment, standing debris, or improper gutter slope.
- Downspout restrictions develop when smaller materials wash past the top opening and form an internal plug within the vertical piping or elbows.
