When Lower Merion gutters fill up
Tree species common in the region, such as broadleaf red maple, white oak, hickory, tulip poplar, sweetgum, and eastern white pine, constantly drop debris onto local homes. Spring brings oak catkins that clump in gutter channels, while fall releases thick foliage, acorns, and spiky sweetgum balls. Leaf drop usually peaks in mid October, filling downspout openings right before winter arrives. Freezing nights happen and snow is likely, turning wet sludge into heavy weight that drags on roof lines. Although ice dams in gutters are not an issue here, trapped water expands as it freezes. We recommend schedule gutter cleaning at least twice a year, spring and fall.
