When Litchfield gutters fill up
Trees common in the region, including broadleaf sugar maple, red maple, bur oak, hickory, American elm, white pine, and spruce, drop heavy debris into open gutters. Maple seed wings fall during spring, while acorns, needles, and fallen leaves load channels later in the year. Leaf drop usually peaks in mid October, quickly choking drainage paths before winter. Freezing nights follow, and ice dams in gutters become a real winter hazard as trapped water turns to solid ice and heavy snow falls on the roof. We recommend gutter cleaning at least twice a year, in spring and fall, to keep channels empty before winter freezing begins in Illinois.
