Debris and Drainage Conditions Affecting Gutters
Roof runoff can be interrupted in several ways depending on how debris settles in the channel:
- An outlet blockage occurs when twigs, leaves, or muck collect directly over the drop opening, trapping standing water even if the rest of the trough is mostly open.
- Overflow along an entire gutter run typically happens when decaying matter fills the channel, slowing water movement until rain spills over the front edge during heavier storms.
- Downspout restrictions develop when small pieces wash past the opening and pack into elbows, backing water up toward the eaves.
