Conditions That Cause Gutter and Downspout Clogs
Gutter clogs develop when outdoor debris settles in channels and obstructs water flow toward the outlets. Depending on the trees and conditions near your roof, gutters may collect different types of organic material over time:
- Fallen leaves, small twigs, and bark fragments shed from nearby branches
- Evergreen needles and seed pods that pack tightly into corners and outlets
- Decomposed organic grit that forms dense silt along the gutter floor
- Bird nests, rodent debris, or plant seedlings taking root in trapped dirt
