When Esopus gutters fill up
Trees common across the region drop heavy material throughout the year into local roof channels. Red maple, white oak, hickory, tulip poplar, and sweetgum trees drop leaf scatter, heavy acorns, and spiky sweetgum balls, while oak catkins coat roof lines in spring. Eastern white pine needles also settle into channels, forming tight mats. Leaf drop usually peaks in early October across Esopus, filling downspouts fast. Freezing nights follow quickly, and ice dams in gutters become a real winter problem when trapped water freezes hard under snow. We recommend a full gutter cleaning at least twice a year, spring and fall, to protect residential systems.
