When Elma gutters fill up
Trees common in the region, including red maple, white oak, hickory, tulip poplar, sweetgum, and eastern white pine, drop heavy material into Elma gutters. In spring, oak catkins fill gutter channels. Leaf drop usually peaks in early October, filling lines with broad leaves, acorns, and spiky sweetgum balls. Freezing nights happen regularly in Western New York, and snow is likely throughout winter. Trapped wet leaves quickly lead to ice dams in gutters during winter freeze-thaw cycles. We recommend a full gutter cleaning at least twice a year, spring and fall, to keep water moving freely before freezing conditions arrive.
