When Derby gutters fill up
Trees common in the region drop heavy organic material into residential gutters throughout the year. Broadleaf sugar maple, red maple, American beech, white birch, and northern red oak drop heavy leaves, while eastern white pine and eastern hemlock shed fine needles. In spring, maple seed wings fill open troughs, followed by acorns in early fall. Leaf drop usually peaks in mid October, creating total blockages before cold weather sets in. Freezing nights happen regularly in Connecticut winters, and clogged gutters lead to ice dams that damage roof surfaces and pull troughs from the fascia. We recommend professional gutter cleaning at least twice a year, spring and fall.
