Distinguishing Outlet Blockages from Gutter Run Clogs
Describe water movement as an observation to discuss. Different restrictions or defects can produce similar symptoms, so an inspection may be needed to establish the cause:
- An outlet blockage occurs where the horizontal channel meets the downspout drop, causing water to back up rapidly at the corners even when the main troughs appear relatively clear.
- A gutter run clog happens along the straight lengths where leaves, twigs, or silt accumulate, resulting in mid-channel spilling before runoff ever reaches the downspout.
- Standing water remaining after rain stops typically indicates heavy settled debris or inadequate channel slope rather than a sudden downspout obstruction.
