Understanding Outlet Blockages and Overflow Conditions
A gutter system may overflow for two very different reasons. Debris can collect directly over a drop outlet, causing water to back up and spill over the corners even when the rest of the trough is mostly empty. Alternatively, leaves, twigs, and fine sediment can settle along the entire run, creating shallow dams that allow rain to spill over the front lip during steady rainfall.
