When Canton gutters fill up
Tree species common in the region, such as sugar maple, red maple, bur oak, hickory, American elm, white pine, and spruce, shed debris into local gutters. Maple seed wings fall during late spring, while acorns, pine needles, and heavy leaves drop later in the year, usually peaking in early October. When winter arrives in Canton, freezing nights occur, making snow likely and creating ice dams in gutters clogged with wet leaves. Trapped water freezes, expanding inside gutter lines and downspouts while pushing against fascia boards. To keep water moving, we recommend gutter cleaning at least twice a year, in spring and fall, before winter cold arrives in Michigan.
