Distinguishing Outlet Clogs from Run Overflow
Water issues during rain often point to distinct blockage conditions along the roof edge:
- An outlet blockage occurs when leaves or organic debris pack tightly over the drop outlet, backing up water even when the rest of the gutter run is mostly clear.
- Run overflow happens when accumulated grit or decaying matter fills the length of the channel, causing rainwater to spill over the front lip before reaching the drop point.
- Downspout elbow jams stop water movement inside the vertical pipe, creating sudden pooling directly above the upper joint.
