When Berkeley gutters fill up
Trees common in the region, including sugar maple, red maple, bur oak, hickory, American elm, white pine, and spruce, drop heavy materials throughout the seasons. Fallen leaves, seed wings, acorns, and pine needles accumulate rapidly inside open channels. In early October, leaf drop usually peaks across Illinois, bringing massive loads of organic waste to every roofline. Freezing nights follow shortly after, creating ice dams in gutters when trapped water freezes solid during winter cold snaps. Heavy snow then piles on top of trapped ice, risking structural collapse. We recommend cleaning at least twice a year, spring and fall, to clear fresh seasonal debris before frozen conditions arrive.
